BMW 8HP Transmission Identification

Do not buy a BMW ZF 8HP from the seller title alone. Two transmissions can look similar while the case marking, bellhousing, torque converter, cooler-port arrangement, output flange or dimensions point to a different unit.

This identification guide covers BMW 8HP45, 8HP50, 8HP51, 8HP70, 8HP75, 8HP76, 8HP90 and 8HP95 transmissions. Use the checks below to record what is physically on the gearbox before comparing listings or requesting a replacement.

BMW 8HP identification checklist

  1. Photograph the case marking: capture the full model marking and nearby numbers clearly.
  2. Confirm the driveline layout: note whether the transmission is from a rear-wheel-drive or xDrive application.
  3. Compare the bellhousing and converter: do not assume the same 8HP family name means the same engine-side fitment.
  4. Measure the cooler ports and mounting threads: record the actual dimensions rather than estimating from a photo.
  5. Measure the output flange: where applicable, record its PCD and insert size.
  6. Measure the transmission length: compare like-for-like reference points.
  7. Send the evidence before ordering: provide the VIN, chassis, existing transmission label and clear photos.

Important: this page helps narrow identification; it is not a universal fitment guarantee. Verify the complete unit and vehicle requirements before ordering or starting a conversion.

Identify your transmission

Start by looking at the left hand side of the transmission, in the rear bottom (A). You will find some numbers, the last row indicates the transmission model.

Identify your oil cooler port size (B) in mm. Identify the mounting thread size, M6 or M8.

Identify the output flange PCD and insert size. Not applicable on AWD transmissions.

Identify the length of the transmission (D).

Use our Transmission Technical Information page to see reference measurements on all the above dimensions.

From identification to the right BMW 8HP parts

Once you have the case marking and measurements, compare the BMW 8HP45, 50, 70 and 75 guide, review BMW 8HP transmission parts in Australia, or use the BMW 8HP swap parts checklist.

Looking for an N57 8HP70 rather than another 8HP variant? Review the current BMW N57 8HP70 / 8HP70Z RWD gearbox listing for its recorded application details, photos and buyer checklist.

This is a specific RWD N57 listing, not a universal 8HP70 fitment reference. Compare the transmission label, bellhousing, converter, cooler ports, output arrangement and vehicle details before ordering. If the listing does not match, send the same evidence through the BMW Parts Request page.
